Lootoo Solution

Lootoo offers a dignified, safe, clean and environmentally sustainable solution. We provide access to portable toilets in urban slums, and convert human waste into biogas for use in the local economy. Through recruitment of slum dwellers for maintenance and security Lootoo facilitates local employment generation and skills creation, all of which facilitates important socio-economic impacts in the form of improved health, higher child school attendance and learning, increased local incomes and skills, and increased safety and dignity, especially for women.

Concept

Lootoo provides culturally appropriate, user-friendly, and environmentally friendly portable toilet stalls in urban slums. For access to these slum-dwellers pay a minor, non-prohibitive, monthly user-fee, which contributes towards part of the costs of daily maintenance and security and ensure that all units are continuously kept clean and accessible.

The waste is removed from the portable toilets on a daily basis using a motorized vacuum pit-latrine exhauster designed to provide a simple and inexpensive method for emptying pit-latrines in areas where access by conventional exhausters is impossible, for instance, because of narrow roads as we see in most urban slums.

Using the same motorized vehicle the waste is then transported to a Lootoo bio-gas plant, where it is converted into biogas, and re-sold for electricity generation, fuel, or other energy-intensive uses. This conversion process not only produces biogas but also an effluent which can be used as manure for agricultural purposes or discharged safely into any water body with no negative effects on the environment.
